Spring 2008 Semester
Beginning in the late
sixteenth century, it became fashionable for young aristocrats to
visit Paris, Venice, Florence, Rome and beyond, as the culmination of
their classical education. Thus was born the idea of the Grand Tour, a
practice which introduced Englishmen, Germans, Scandinavians and also
Americans to the art and culture of France, Italy, Greece and the
Middle East for the next 300 years.
This semester we will
explore the Grand Tour and the influence that the opening of Europe to
affordable travel had on expanding cultural and scientific knowledge,
including new artistic movements, technological advances and
avant-garde trends.
