Sebastopol Area Senior Center Expands Services for LGBT+ Seniors

The Sebastopol Area Senior Center (SASC), a West County nonprofit organization, recently launched a plan to expand services and programs for LGBT+ seniors, particularly those who are prone to isolation and loneliness. Thanks to a generous grants from the Horizons Foundation and Community Foundation of Sonoma County, and the help of local donors, SASC is offering fun and enriching activities that allow LGBT+ seniors and allies to engage with each other in a safe, welcoming place.

Sonoma Valley LGBT Seniors:  Social group building community. The Sonoma County Area Agency on Aging is committed to creating welcoming and knowledgeable services, programs and systems for LGBTQI people.  The Sonoma County Senior Resource Guide provides an excellent directory of regional organizations, services and programs. 

LGBTQ Connection This organization has discussions groups, no-cost counseling and even a local radio show for LGBTQ seniors. They have meetings in Santa Rosa and Guerneville.

Sonoma County - Outbeat Radio Every Sunday Night 8 p.m. Since 1999 Outbeat Radio has been the Voice of the North Bay's LGBTQ Community.

The Bay Area Bisexual Network’s (BABN) mission is to develop a healthy, vibrant, multicultural bisexual community in the Bay Area and to promote better understanding of bisexual lives and issues within the larger LGBT community and the public. BABN offers information and referral services; cultural & social events; and a monthly peer-support group.

BALIF is a Minority Bar Association of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgendered persons and their supporters, with over 500 members including judges, lawyers, legal workers and law students. It is a helpful resource for information about laws affecting the greater LGBT community.

CUAV’s mission is to prevent and respond to violence against and within our diverse LGBTQ communities. CUAV offers peer-based counseling, direct assistance, education and outreach, grassroots organizing, and policy advocacy. Support groups for LGBT people dealing with violence or abuse.

Family Caregiver Alliance (FCA) defines family broadly and inclusively and supports those caring for adults with chronic conditions, like Alzheimer’s, MS and stroke. Along with family consultation, education and respite, FCA’s website provides two LGBT caregiver fact sheets on legal issues and LGBT caregiver concerns. FCA also has a national Online LGBT Caregiver Support Group.

Gaylesta is a psychotherapist association that provides mental health services, including therapist referrals, education, and consultation. Their referral service provides help in locating an LGBT-friendly therapist near you.

Horizons Foundation
Horizons is the world's first community foundation of, by, and for LGBTQ people. We invest in LGBTQ nonprofits, strengthen a culture of LGBTQ giving, and build a permanent endowment to secure our community’s future for generations to come.

Lavender Seniors provides social activities, support, and networking for LGBT seniors in the East Bay to improve the quality of life of older LGBT residents of Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. Lavender Seniors also provides outreach, advocacy, and education.

Openhouse in San Francisco provides housing information, friendly visiting, social get-togethers, workshops, case management, and other services and community programs to support the health and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender older adults and is building LGBT-friendly affordable housing for LGBT seniors.

The Spahr Center is Marin County’s only non-profit community agency devoted to serving, supporting and empowering the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community and everyone in the county living with and affected by HIV.

The Transgender Law Center (TLC) is a civil rights organization advocating for transgender communities. TLC connects transgender people and their families to culturally competent legal services, increases acceptance and enforcement of laws and policies that support California's transgender communities, and works to change laws and systems that fail to incorporate the needs and experiences of transgender people.

TransGender SF is a support and social group for the entire transgender and gender non-conforming community. TGSF educates the public and promotes a positive image of transgendered persons. The transgendered community includes all transgendered persons, their family and friends, and anyone with a sincere interest in the transgender community.

LGBT National Senior Hotline
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) National Senior Hotline provides telephone peer-support, as well as factual information and local resources for our senior community.  No matter where they live, LGBT seniors have a place to call when they need peer-support, information and local resources. 

GLMA Gay and Lesbian Medical Association
GLMA was founded in 1981 to ensure quality, non-judgmental healthcare and to end workplace discrimination for LGBT healthcare professionals. Search for LGBT-friendly health care providers in your area.

National Association of Gay & Lesbian Real Estate Professionals
According to NAGLREP (National Association of Gay & Lesbian Real Estate Professionals), NAGLREP is the voice of LGBT Real Estate serving LGBT and allied home buyers and sellers.

NCLR National Center for Lesbian Rights
Located in SF, NCLR is a national nonprofit law firm that protects the legal and human rights of lesbians, gay men and bisexual and transgender people across the United States through impact litigation, public policy advocacy, public education and direct legal services.

National Resource Center on LGBT+ Aging is the country's first and only technical assistance resource center focused on improving the quality of services and supports offered to lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or transgender older adults, their families and caregivers.

Lambda Legal Founded in 1973, Lambda Legal is the oldest and largest national legal organization whose mission is to achieve full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and everyone living with HIV through impact litigation, education and public policy work.
