Artist Statement:
The art of photography changes daily. I first started using a 4x5 view camera; now you can take high quality photos with a cell phone. With Photoshop and other editing tools, photos can be manipulated to a degree not recognizable to the original. So, is photography really photography or has it morphed into a new artform with multiple tools? Today, taking a photo with a camera or a cell phone is just the starting point.
One thing has not changed - the emotional impetus to capture a moment in time. Many years ago, I had a commercial/industrial photo studio in San Francisco. Now if I’m asked what kind of photography I prefer, I would have to say Street Photography: capturing a moment of a couple sharing a smile, or the love a father and mother show when escorting their kids through busy streets. The photo of the two sisters (in this show) sharing a laugh is a great example of capturing a moment in time that will never happen again. They will share another laugh, but it will never be this specific moment.
The photos and their compositions are a result of feelings a particular image gave me. The photographs of buildings with bright colors are either from countries of cold climate or, in the case of the photo from Cuba, a poverty-stricken country where colors help to lift the mood. The picture with the young person stopping at 3 figures, was taken at the entrance to the London Museum. There could be an interesting story resulting from this (that could be an invitation).
Most of the picture frames were made from recycled wood and put together in my current studio (my garage when I back the car out). One hundred percent of any sales will go directly to the Sebastopol Area Senior Center. I love this place, as I am sure you do as well.
